About Mother of Thousands
Kalanchoe daigremontiana, commonly known as the Mother of Thousands or Devil's Backbone, is a striking succulent native to Madagascar. This plant is renowned for its unique reproductive strategy, producing tiny plantlets along the edges of its large, fleshy leaves. These plantlets readily drop off and root wherever they land, leading to its common name. The leaves are lance-shaped, often marked with brownish or purple spots on the underside, adding to its ornamental appeal. Kalanchoe daigremontiana thrives in bright, indirect light and requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot. While it is an attractive addition to any succulent collection, it is also known for its toxicity, particularly to pets and livestock, necessitating careful placement out of reach of animals.

Care guidance:
- Light: Place in bright, indirect sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.
- Watering: Water sparingly. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings.
- Soil: Use well-draining soil, like a cactus or succulent mix. Good drainage prevents root rot.
- Temperature: Keep temperatures between 60-85°F (15-29°C). Protect from frost and cold drafts.
- Humidity: Prefers low to moderate humidity. Ensure good air circulation.
- Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced, diluted fertilizer in spring and summer. Reduce or stop feeding in fall and winter.
- Propagation: Plantlets form along leaf edges. Place them on soil to root.
- Potting: Repot every 1-2 years. Use a slightly larger pot with fresh soil.
- Pruning: Remove dead or damaged leaves.
- Toxicity: Keep away from pets and children. Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin.
